Legal Structure | The Whispering Cottonwood Farm Educational Center was born from the idea that nature is one of our greatest teachers. However, nature, like so many things, will pass us by if we do not take the time to observe what it has to teach. To observe the change in the color of native prairie grass from season to season, or to sit on the river bank and have the trickle of the water take you to places that are calm, peaceful, and soothing, to watch a hawk soar, or a spider carry its young on its back, all of these are the teachers of nature and they can inspire us to reach our greatest potential. In this day and age when children and young adults spend great amounts of time in hyperspace and their lives move at hyper speed nature can provide them with a sense of stability that is as sure as the rising and setting sun. All children and young adults will develop a connection to nature that will guide them in protecting the earth. And as adults they will realize that the quality of our earth’s environment is a reflection of the quality of our own character. To offer children and young adults settings to observe, study, interact with, and be inspired by nature and to awaken in them their “sense of wonder” so they may experience the Earth as naturalists, be compelled to understand the Earth as scientists, and be driven to protect the Earth as stewards. To carry out the above mission the Whispering Cottonwood Farm Educational Center Inc. utilizes an 88 acre farm and riparian area bordering the eastern city limits of Salina, Kansas. The farm and riparian area are graced by a multitude of biodiverse settings including prairie, forest, cropland, horticultural cropland, orchard, a river, and a creek. The physical address of the Center is 2737 East North Street, Salina, Kansas 67401. The Center also assists schools in developing on site gardens and natural areas in order to connect children and young adults to nature. The Whispering Cottonwood Farm Educational Center Inc. is a 501 (c) 3 not for profit corporation. It was incorporated in the state of Kansas on October 28th, 2005. It has a board of directors currently consisting of four members with each member holding an office, president, vice president, secretary and treasurer.
